How to set: source-based practice notes

E is the set input in September community controls. The 26 October Steam reply recommends a full charge for a quick set, charging while moving and aiming where the hitter will rise. This is community advice, not a measured current-build lesson. Read the four practice steps below alongside the linked setter video; no charge duration or frame timing has been verified.

  1. Read the first pass

Move toward the ball’s landing point, leaving the hitter room to approach. E is the set input in September community controls; use the current on-screen binding if it differs.

  2. Choose the hitter’s approach point

Aim toward the space the hitter can reach, not simply their current body position. The 26 October Steam quick-set reply specifically says to aim where the hitter will be rising.

  3. Charge the set

The controls list says the set can be charged. For the quick-set variation, the Steam reply recommends a full charge and says it can be charged while running. We have no measured charge duration or release window.

  4. Coordinate the next touch

Send the set toward the planned approach and let the teammate attack. In a team match, do not take two consecutive touches yourself. Practise an ordinary set first; the linked Pikixyz lesson is a community reference, not a developer manual.

Watch Pikixyz’s basic setter lesson. The standalone setter article is held back until it has three genuine step screenshots. General Steam court screenshots are not presented as setter test evidence.

Next guide: spike and block

The rule that explains the rest

I lined the Steam store copy up against the September control notes and a player thread about serves. The store promises “simple to pick up” and a steep curve. The notes explain why both lines fit: movement is manual, and every touch goes where the cursor is pointing.

Each side may touch the ball three times. The same player cannot hit it twice in a row, except in 1v1. A block is not one of the three touches. Bump, dive, set, spike, and block are the verbs. Offline bots can fill a court. Online quick play and custom lobbies are listed by community mode notes from the playtest era.

Techs worth learning before launch

Strafe: hold the strafe key (Shift in the September bind list) so your body faces the cursor. Jump: hold Space to charge. A full charge jumps higher. Jumping out of a sprint keeps momentum, which is how people fly past the ball.

Quick set: the player thread says a quick set needs a full charge, and you can charge while you run, with the cursor on the hitter’s takeoff spot. Power serve: start at the baseline, toss forward, approach, finish the charge at the top of the jump, then release. Those names are player language. temkosoft has not posted a move list.

Where to go next

New to the sport-in-a-game loop: how to play, then controls. If your serve hits the net: serve types. If you are the middle player: setting, then spike and block.

SharpV’s tips video chapters, checked from the public description, put spiking at 0:33, sprinting at 2:14, strafing at 2:51, blocking at 3:51, and diving at 5:31. The official raw-match video is the long look at tempo. Neither video is a patch-note. Binds can move. The in-game key strip wins if it disagrees.

Questions people ask

Why do people strafe in just volleyball?

Holding the strafe input faces your body toward the cursor and shortens the turn animation. Community control notes from the September playtest describe that, plus a faster recovery into a side dive.

How many touches do you get?

Three per side. A block does not count as one of them, according to the same beginner notes.

What is the one skill that matters first?

Put the cursor on the target before you press the touch button. The cursor, not your facing, picks the ball’s direction.
